Երաժշտասերների մեծ մասը միանգամից հիշում են խարիզմատիկ վոկալիստ Իան Քըրտիսի ողբերգական ինքնասպանության ցնցող պատմությունը, երբ խոսում ես Joy Division խմբի մասին…Բայց իրականում սա սովորական մի տղայի պատմություն չէ, ով երազում էր ռոք աստղ դառնալ և այնուհետև ինքնասպան լինել 23 տարեկան հասակում` անմահանալու պատմության մեջ: Իրականում երաժշտությունն է, որ առանձնացնում է այս խմբին, և դա է, որ պետք է մխվի մարդկանց հիշողության մեջ և դարձնի նրանց անկրկնելի ու բացառիկ երաժշտության պատմության մեջ:
Ուրախություն թե՞ դեպրեսիա… Չես կարող մետաղադրամի այս երկու կողմերը տարանջատել, երբ խոսքը Joy Division խմբի երաժշտության մասին է: Իանի թավ վոկալը ևս մի նախապայման է ավելի շատ դեպրեսիվ, քան լավատեսական մթնոլորտի ստեղծման համար: Բայց սա նրանց երաժշտության միայն մի դեմքն է: Unknown Pleasures ալբոմն իսկապես հնարավորություն է տալիս բացահայտելու երաժշտության նախկինում անհայտ և չզգացված կողմերը:
Բոլոր երգերն, անկախ նրանից, թե ինչ տրամադրություն են հաղորդում, կրում են ահագնացող, մոտեցող ինչ-որ բանի շունչն իրենց մեջ: I remember nothing-ը այդ երգերից մեկն է` այնքան սառը և սարսռեցնող: Երբ լսում եմ այն, կարծես զգում եմ` ինչպես է ծուխը բարձրանում խոնավ գետնից և ուրվականները պարում մթության մեջ: We were strangers, for way too long…

Երևի թե Day of the Lords ամենից “անկումային”, բայց միաժամանակ հրաշալի երգերից մեկն է ալբոմում` ստիպելով քեզ մտածել կյանքի անիմաստության և ցավի անվերջանալի շրջապտույտի մասին, երբ միայն մի հարց է մնում գլխումդ. երբ է այս ամենն ավարտվելու (“Where will it end?”) Digital-ն իր ռիթմիկ կիթառի ինտրոյով դեպրեսիային վերջ կդնի, հատկապես, երբ Իանի վոկալն է ներխուժում: Եվ այդ վարակիչ բասը, որ միշտ առկա է երգում կարծես հետևելով քեզ անընդհատ…Սկսելով տիպական ռոքնռոլլային հարվածայիններով` Disorder-ը շատ “դրական” կիթառային սոլոյի է անցնում և նույնպես ընդհանուր առմամբ վերելքային տրամադրություն ունի:
Shadowplay ալբոմի առավել ճանաչված և “ջղային” երգերից է, քանի որ երգի բառերն արտասանելիս Իանը կարծես ապտակում է, ծեծում է դրանցով: Եվ, իհարկե, “պտտեցնող” կիթառային սոլոն այնքան լավն է:
Շատ դեպրեսիվ և այդ տրամադրությունն ուժեղացնելու միտված նաև մոնոտոն Candidate-ում Իանը կարծես շշնջում է գերեզմանից, ինչ-որ մի անդրերկրյա տեղից, իսկ խորիմաստ բառերը կարծես սղոցում են ուղեղդ.

Insight-ը ալբոմի “ամենապայծառ” երգերից մեկն է երաժշտական առումով` սկսելով շատ կենսախինդ հարվածայիններով և “հրազենային ձայներով”, որոնք “կրակում են” բազմիցս ողջ երգի ընթացքում: Ընդհանրապես, Joy Division-ի երաժշտությունն ունի շատ համապատասխան ֆոնային ձայների գործիքավորում, որ համապատասխան մթնոլորտ են ձևավորում յուրաքանչյուր երգի համար:Interzone, ալբոմի ամենակարճ երգն է, որ սկսում է Led Zepelin-ի Kashmir-ը հիշեցնող “աղաղակներով”, իսկ հետո վերածվում հոյակապ բլյուզային կիթառային սոլոյի:

Joy Division-ը իսկապես անդերգրաունդ է, այնքան անդերգրաունդ, որ դու տառացիորեն զգում ես քեզ կամրջի տակ նստած, ավերակ պատերով շրջապատված, իսկ կողքովդ կեղտաջուր է հոսում, այնքան խորն է, որ ունակ է քո մեջ գրելու ձիրք արթնացնել, այնքան հասուն է և այնքան երիտասարդ միևնույն ժամանակ: Նրանց երաժշտությունը չունի պիտակներ և սահմաններ, այն քո ներքին ճիչն է կամ շշնջոցը, երբ անչափ տխուր ես կամ երջանիկ…

Most of the music listeners first recall the striking story of the charismatic lead vocalist Ian Curtis’s tragic suicide when they think of Joy Division…But that is not an average story of a guy who desired to become a rock star and then die at the age of 23; the story is much deeper and it is the music here that sets them apart and makes them unique and irreplaceable in the history.
Joy or depression? You can’t separate these both sides of one coin if you talk about their music. Ian’s hollow and deep voice is a prerequisite for creating an atmosphere of a more depressive rather than optimistic mood. But that’s only one face of their music. Unknown Pleasures will make you discover really unknown and previously unfelt sides of what music can be like.
All the songs no matter what mood they have always create the feeling of approaching disaster. I remember nothing is one of those songs so very cold and shivering. Each time I listen to it I feel the smoke rising up from wet floors in the darkness where the ghosts dance in a sinister circle… We were strangers, for way too long…

Day of the Lords is really one of the most downward and beautiful songs making you think of senseless life and endless circle of pain with just one question left: where will it end? Digital with its fast rhythmic intro guitar will leave no place for depression especially when Ian’s “yelling” crawls in. And Peter Hook's this catchy bass always present in the song hunting you is so cool!...Starting with typical rock’n’roll drums Disorder gets then very positive guitar intro and has the mood of rise in overall.
Shadowplay is one of the most famous songs of the album and the angriest one probably as while pronouncing the words Ian seems as if hitting or kicking with them. And of course the “spinning” guitar solo is really great.
Very depressive and monotone to strengthen the overall mood Candidate has Ian’s voice whispering as if from grave, from somewhere underground while profound lyrics swirl the mind:

Insight is one of the brightest songs in the album in terms of the sound starting with the very live drums and “firing gun sounds” “shooting” the song form time to time. In general Joy Division’s music always has very corresponding sounds in the background that shape the right atmosphere for each song.Interzone, the shortest song starts with yelling that reminds of the Led Zepelin’s Kashmir then flows into great bluesy guitar solos in the background.
One of the best songs in the album to me is New Dawn Fades with its wonderful intro that really gets through you, music I think I could keep on listening to forever. And these great lyrics literally sticking to your mind:

As if cut from old westerns Wilderness reminds me of Iggy Popp’s Passenger because of Ian’s vocal. It is a very profound and religiously affected song.
She’s lost control is impossible to resist as this song has an inexplicable hypnotic impact on listeners and really drives you mad and makes you dance in a nervous hysteria, one of the best songs I have ever heard.
Joy Division is really underground, so “underground” that you can literally find yourself lying under a bridge with crappy walls around and dirty water pouring along, it is so profound that you may suddenly discover your writing poems skill inspired with their lyrics, it is so mature and so young at the same time. Their music has no labels and no limits it is just your inner scream and whisper when you feel grief or real joy…
