The Dandy Warhols - Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia (August 1, 2000)

Okay, if you like psychedelic rock, then you ought to know The Velvet Underground. And if you know - and hopefully love - The Velvet Underground, then the first thing that associates with them in your mind will be - and that's for sure - a banana on the cover of their album. That's it, the very banana made by infamous pop-art king Andy Warhol. And that's when we get to the point - The Dandy Warhols. Obtained their name from the pop-art guy, changed it a bit to sound twice as interesting, and voila - started playing psychedelic music to perfectly fit the style of The Velvet Underground followers!

Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia is band's third studio album, released in 2000, and by all means it's the most remarkable record they've ever produced. As already obvious from the title, the album is a representation of modern understanding of bohemia - thirten small pieces of stories about who seeks what and why. While some go seeking for god and others open their mind to find themselves, the rest may be flattered just by things they own. The record starts with soft and smooth Godless with tender melody played by acoustic guitars fulfilled with harmonic sound of trumpet. The song is kind of a prologue to the topic raised in the album stating that certain sort of people never really search for anything, just remain passive, thoughtless and thus - soulless:

As thoughtless as you were back then -
I swear that you are godless

As a contradiction to such attitude, Godless fades into the next track called Mohammed, where a man is struggling each day to find a freedom within, but "all this demons, harass my soul" - says he and lives on with desperation and loneliness. The tune is filled with acoustic guitars, soft drums and a collaboration of solo-guitar with a trumpet, which makes it sound profound and in its full extent. This is what might bring one to the policy of denying - and agression: Nietzsche starts with strong riffs like Nirvana's and psychedelic vocals, almost breathing out the mantra:

I want a god who stays dead
Not plays dead
I - even I - can play dead

.. on and on and on again. The words of a thinker, the idea of hurt. Teenage anger towards the one who's never even proven to be there, a rebel against the usual. Where the usual is.. the one presented in fourth track - Country Leaver. Village life, bluesy guitars, small world of calm and joy, cowboys and dances on the tavern tables, and a guy who's tired of all this and just wants to go travelling the world. Though he knows pretty well that travel would change him a lot - from a bright country boy to a big-city punk. Solid logically continues the storyline, by placing the hero into a train and providing him a brand-new life to start again. Song is positive, with strong influence of The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed respectively, and it opens the topic about people searching for hidden treasures in their own subconscience: "I must have a door in the back of my head", as the lyrics say. But Solid illustrates the first stage of such nature, the lightest one by all means. Second stage comes with Horse Pills - one falls down as low as possible, ready to do anything just to get a dose so he might feel good again. For some priceless few moments. The music is agressive, lyrics are made of dirt, and you can almost feel the terrifying reality The Dandy Warhols try to tell.

But the darkest hour is just before the dawn. And the next stage is getting off the drugs, the dirt and the horror:

Like it or not
Like a ball and a chain
All I wanna do is get off
I feel it for a minute -

That's the Get Off - a ray of light after the nightmare. This time our hero seeks himself, the lost and forgotten part of him, while trying to slip off the drugs and come back to normal life again. Next song is an ode to other side of reality - state of infinite dreams with Sleep. One is tired, one wants to live happily ever after, even if that life would be surreal and totally made-up. Song itself is dreamy and soothing, perfectly describes the state of mind within a tired body, with head in the clouds, and the imaginary wind touching your hair.

And - we're back to act one, scene 9 - the Cool Scene. The highest value is someone's appreciation of who you really are, but therefore you go and try to look better in that special someone's eyes. Look cool, maybe? Or even perfect? Would being cool matter as much as having cool things? Would that be enough to enter the list of modern bohemia? This are the questions raised up by Bohemian Like You in between the lines, while talking about cars, and modern, "alternative" tastes everybody adopts to look original and wanted - by his or hers special someone, which is in fact a truly casual thing:

I'm getting wise,
And i'm feeling so Bohemian like you,
It's you that I want so please,
Just a casual, casual easy thing.
Is it? It is for me.

On to the next sketch - Shakin'. A lazy and ignorant attitude towards everything that could've been important - "You were getting older, I was getting wiser not". That idea was also noted in the following track, Big Indian, which gets us back to the start of the storyline - the search is now for just the happyending, no big drama or high stakes included.

When the future is frightening
And I seem to be fighting it
Well soon as it's brightening
Then I, I feel fine

That's not a manifestation of wisdom, for "you never get wise, you only get older". The sunny tune leads us to the closing track, which was very symbolically named The Gospel and represents an end to any kind of searches, whether they were made in order to find god, or wisdom, or some new motto to keep you running for the rest of your life, who knows? And the last words sang out on the album were "I will take you home", a perfect ending for the epic story, don't you think?

Cheers from Jude,
stay tuned for more

Late Of The Pier - Fantasy Black Channel (July 30, 2008)

Probably you have heard this band for the first time at the disco. The DJ surely did the right choice becuase the music of this band won't let your body stand firm but will rock every single cell of it!
But before you get the wrong impression, let me introduce Late Of The Pier to you!
These guys started the band when they were only teenagers. Labled as dance-punk they would seem the most funny figures in indie rock you have probably seen on YouTube recently.. Well, at least judging from Hearbeat and Focker videos.

But they are not only for entertaining on the dancefloor. Fantasy Black Channel will amaze you with its deep but not complicated (aka Arctic Monkeys) lyrics talking about not easy life. Exactly! I mean, literally!

Easy life is it an easy life?
No It's HARD

The Enemy Are The Future

Suicide is in my blood
It always was
but it doesn't evaporate in the light any more
And this world is no place
For a mind or a thought
No its not

Also the band likes to repeat the lines, like in Heartbeat. This line will stuck in your mind for a long-long time!

It's just a line
It's just a line
It's just a line
....................

Heartbeat

The most part of the album has been recorded.. guess where? In Sam Eastgate's (vocalist) bedroom. Probably this influenced on the mood of the album. It's more sincere and unpredictable. Leaving alone the fact that they used distorted guitars, dirty bass, synths, Sam also did quite a lot of experiments with his voice, sometimes using hip-hop style, sometimes getting much like the vocal of Matthew Bellamy from Muse. Quite often you have the feeling that Mr. Eastgate's voice is what makes you fall in love with this music. But it's not only mechanical waves in the air but also the electrical impulses. Songs sometimes get weird. Take The Bears Are Coming as an example. The song itself is an electronic work, but sometimes it becomes blues, punk then whatever. But it doesn't make you step back in surprise but feels so natural! Remember the bedroom stuff?

All the songs in the album are a subject of long talks and attention. And depending on your mood/location/ocupation you can choose the appropriate ones!
  1. If you are a DJ, pick Space and The Woods, The Bears Are Coming, Heartbeat, Whitesnake, Focker.
  2. If you like much of instrumental stuff, then go ahead! Hot Tent Blues, VW!
  3. For thinking - Broken, Mad Dogs And Englishmen.
  4. For evening listening - Random Firl, The Enemy Are The Future, Bathroom Gurgle.
But no matter what you choose the innovative sound of Late Of The Pier, easy-to-remember tunes, repeating lines and the crazy true-English accented vocal of the frontman will help you discover another cool and perspective British band!

Yours truly, Gaya

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare (April 18, 2007)

The evolution of music shows us that it lives a periodic life. I mean, we can break time into decades and put heroes of music in each of them. Don't go to far into past, just to remember last decade. In 90s there was a blast of grunge/alternative music which started actually in the late 80s. Not the pioneers, but the leaders of the trend perheps were Nirvana. As a response, British took a revenge, and there was the blossom of brit rock/pop in 90s. Maybe to this we can link also the popularization of indie music, especially indie rock.
But probably the best times of indie rock were yet to come. Indeed, the bands, such as Muse, Placebo, Franz Ferdinand, Klaxons, Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay and others, are stamped as bands of 00s and surely carrying the tag indie. Yes, folks, the 1st decade of 21st century belongs to indie rock. And Arctic Monkeys had their input in this historical truth.

Refusing dealing with record lables from the very beginning, Arctic Monkeys gained the love and respect of British underground scene by themselves and only after that signing with Domino Records. And even after the huge success of their debute LP - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), deserving and confirming their status of indie rock kings, Arctic Monkeys were back with a new, sophomore record just after a few months break. Favourite Worst Nightmare is here to prove to you that these guys are staying for long, they have the energy, the drive and they really have something to say.
The first sign that you have your hands on a pure indie rock album is the original sound of the band that you will recognize from thousands of random records. The first thought you always have when you start to listen to a band's second record is the comparison with the debute one. Well, i have some news for you. Take it easy, please, but you have to accept that this record is more dark. Surprised? Then look again on the cover of the album - Favourite Worst Nightmare. The title speaks for itself. Yes, please, get yourself prepared for a nightmare in the middle of the day.
The title of the album came from the song D Is For Dangerous. Speaking about songs, we can state that Arctic Monkeys kept their style of songwriting: the melodies are not very much, but quite easy to remember, but lyrics.. they are so hard to remember! If you think you're a true Arctic Monkeys fan (arctic monkey from now on), then you have to:
  1. Get the lyrics of the songs (preferably from the band's official website),
  2. Read them while listening to the songs, then learning by heart without music, just words.
  3. Now try with music.
  4. Repeat the steps from 1 to 3 in the period of 1 week.
  5. Make a sort of exam for yourself in the front of the mirror with something in your hands instead of microphone (but preferably, microphone itself).
You're done! Now you are ready to go directly to the dancefloor in the party to surprise all your friends with your arctic monkey skills.

Yes, lyrics are the part in the songs where Arctic Monkeys win the battle! Every single song is a story. In some of them Alex Turner is telling about others, in others he is the main hero. Some of them are taken from real life, like Brianstorm. Real indies wouldn't pass by the subject of celebrities (Teddy Picker), and of course, ballads - Only Ones Who Know, Do Me A Favour, 505.

Speaking about the sound of the album, I can mention that in some places it reminds me the sound of The Strokes' Juicebox. It has elements of gangster music, a bit suspicious. Alex is at the top with his perfect pronounciation of his own complain lyrics, having his voice coming out like from a metal tube, with all the rules of reverberation and sound echoes.

Performing not the most positive sound in the album, the rhythmic guitars, strike drums, gangster bass will make you move anytime you hear the songs making it also a dance music. With his innocent appearance of still teenager, strange way to hold the guitar, lost look, Mr. Turner is certainly the big story teller, specialized in nightmares. So before you go to sleep have a doze of your favourite worst nightmare by Arctic Monkeys. Good night and have a nice nightmare!

Truly Yours
Gaya

Travis - The Boy With No Name (May 7, 2007)

Feels as if a cool breeze is playing on your forehead while you're riding on your bicycle along the smooth green meadows and the sun shines over smiling at you. Everything is in a harmony and equilibrium. Such a peace comes over you...! Listening to Travis' The Boy With no Name album can really bring these feelings to you! This album probably reveals the band's lead singer Fran Healy's feelings-feelings of a parent of a new born son!

For 4 years fans were looking forward to the lovely melodies, Fran's branded "sighs" and making-you-dream-music! And so they created their boy with no name to listen to and to adore! Pretty melodies that are so easily loved at a glance and catch you as soon as you listen to the first sounds.
One of the album's most popular songs Closer is so "close", cute and loveable that you either fall in love even deeper if you are already or wish you were if you're not yet! It has Chinese or Japanese motives that give you the feeling of coziness and comfort!
Selfish Jean is an interesting step away from Travis's traditional style being more dancing and energetic rockn'roll song but still holding the familiar pretty tune inside!
Big Chair starts unusually "negativistic" for Travis but soon gets a positive turning still having a melancholic essence with poetic "You see it could have been me instead of you It could have been me if I wanted to..." lyrics.

Battleships is a story of a sunk ship of love sounding very "classical" taking you to England of 18th or 19th century. One of my favorite songs in the album Eyes Wide Open is somehow different and new having interesting "passionate" guitar slides and nice beats. You can feel how the song grows from the verse to chorus.
My Eyes and Sailing Away are such comfortable songs you can't find anything to criticize on!
One Night is probably the most depressive and minor song in the album but a really nice and Travisly simple but affecting song.
Under the Moonlight is endlessly sweet and romantic song perfect for teen lovers to feel the whole power of love under this song.
Out in Space is the most philosophic song with great lyrics best to be listened to while getting ready to sleep and thinking about the life, to see dreams sailing in millions of stars...
The next song Colder is seemingly about "knocking on heaven's doors": "And the sky is falling down, and there's an angel on the ground, it's getting colder"...
With birds singing and luggage preparing mood comes New Amsterdam creating associations with "Feeling Good"'s text "It's a new dawn, It's a new day and I am feeling good...!"
So this is how you feel when listening to this album. Though it's not guaranteed that you won't get bored soon afterwards you digest this album (which is usually so easy to do with Travis!) it anyway makes you come back again to get the beloved feeling of a domestic comfort when no bad surprises or unexpected turns can spoil your peaceful mood!!!

The Fratellis - Costello Music (October 2, 2006)

You can start being happy as soon as your hand is on Costello Music! This crazy rush of positive energy will overwhelm you and make you feel like life is such a funny thing! This everlasting feeling of freedom and "problemlessness" will stay with you long after you take the headphones off from your ears.

Flathead will make you feel a teenager going to meet friends for hanging out and just doing nothing, talking stupid things, kicking each other, fooling around and teasing people on the way :) The perfectly "innocent" outro of the song leaves a pleasant feeling after the song's ending.

"Whistle For The Choir" (one of the nicest songs in the album to me) creates associations with the Beatles' "Girl" in your mind. The phrase "Only a girl like you can be lonely" describes the song's philosophy best representing the Fratellis themselves who are crazy, amazing and so irresistible not being afraid of not being understood and lonely:)

The most famous song Chelsea dagger is a real dance track the first sounds of which make you jump getting ready to spring, rockn'roll and scream! This happy, careless at the same time "glamorous" song keeps you out of your breath and makes you long for the unexpected outro after the mysterious drum kits when the song is really getting "out of its wits" and makes you do
the same...!!!

The "bluesy" Doginabag is best for the most self-confident ones with "Atomic hearts" hiding a sweet intrigue under its cunning sounds.

Adventurous Creeping Up The Backstairs, impossibly funny Henrietta, "half drunk" Baby Fratelli are other dancing tracks making you laugh and bounce!

Ironic Vince The Loveable Stoner is a story of a careless stoner living by today...not a very healthy though sometimes a dream lifestyle for those (me including) who have to care for the future too much probably... ;)

Everybody knows you cried last night surprises you with so frequently changing rhythms and makes you stay tuned for not missing a new beat! This is the most positive song i have ever heard that is about crying :)

Got Na Nuts From A Hippy is the least rememberable song which is not much different from others besides this funny rhyme "And it was warm in the back of her van When she made me a real man" :)

Ole Black 'n' Blue Eyes is another ballad about a common story of a girl from a suburb trying to rock! It is very cute and these a-a-a-a's are really engaging warning that dealing with the Fratelli boys is not a rewarding thing :)

All in all this is a very positive album singing about you, your everyday life with its up and downs! You get addicted from the first seconds as there is now way to grieve your mood when you're on it! Catchy, though retro and far not an evolutionary musical discovery they are still great not being afraid of being ridiculous or insane and this is what makes them so irresistible!

Thank you Frats!!!

Yours truly
Manu

We Smoke Fags - Eastenders EP (June 16, 2008)

If you are deep into New Rave, probably you will always face the problem of having not enough music. It's a newly born music style and many bands are just starting. And while we wait for the second album of Klaxons, you can listen to newly created bands. And imagine, they are just starting and you can follow them now, from their very first record! What a luck!

We love you, UK! We Smoke Fags - this is the name of another british band that surely could appear in the headlines of all New Rave content. In 2008 they released their first EP - Eastenders.
Consisting of only 2 songs, it promises a great debut album. The single Eastenders is what dance-punk lovers need. With unexpected lyrics, it's a song that you can easily sing along and no doubt can be the hit in the clubs.
Too much money
Not enough intellect..

I sympathize I sympathize
with you
I made my mind, i made my mind
on you
With the lyrics they will surely never win Arctic Monkeys, but you can not call them stupid or senseless. And the band shoot a really rocking video on the song. Bravi!

There is one more song in the EP called Canape Of Love. It's not too impressive, although easy to remember. Comparing to Eastenders, you will probably ignore this song in your playlist of favourites.
Unfortunatelly, the band doesn't have an official web page and there is no content on Wiki, so I guess the band is not active now. But you can find their profile on MySpace.
So, if you are new to New Rave, Eastenders will probably be added to your favourites after you hear it! Waiting for the debut album..
Yours truly, Gaya

Silversun Pickups - Swoon (April 14, 2009)

Those who heard the first full album of this band, surely couldn't wait for their second record because you can never forget this band with its unique guitar sounds, the velvet voice of the vocalist, perfect woman back-vocals, melodic bass and crazy drums.

Swoon, the second album of Silversun Pickups is out on April 14, 2009. Personally me always wait for the "second albums" with fear because most of the bands fail on this, especially when they gain popularity after the first LP. Fortunately, it didn't happen with this band (I was quite sure about this).

You cannot name this music easy-listening, that's why you will discover nice songs in this album one by one, like in Carnavas. It's again light music with some melancholic elements. You will even think of dancing in several moments while listening to the album.

Swoon begins with a sincere and positive "There's No Secrets This Year". It's not only an opening song but also literally tunes you to further listening with it's drive, melody, vocal and lyrics.

Wikipedia says:
Swoon is a term used to express happiness or excitement, to be overwhelmed by joy or emotion toward something. Also a term to dance to the rhythm of music. The term can also be used to describe partially fainting.

Overwhelming can bring the opposite: after 4 minutes 27 seconds the song turns into a depressive outro with the lyrics using the word "swoon". It's also an intro for the next song - paranoic "Royal We", with impressive lyrics. You will enjoy the whole album for a long time, listening to psychedelic "Growing Old Is Getting Old", stressed "It's Nice To Know You Work Alone" with changing sexy vocals of Nikky Monninger/Brian Aubert, the hit of the album "Panic Switch" with its rich guitar sounds, dreamy "Draining", nightmare "Sort Of", easy going "Substitution", fantasy-stic "Catch & Release" and closing "Surrounded".

Personally me was impressed by the drive of "There's No Secret This Year", the lyrics of "Royal We". Also you will get used to "Panic Switch" and "Substitution" quite soon. Other songs you will discover later, in time.

This album won't get you bored. More than that, you probably won't copy the whole album to your player to listen to everyday, but believe me, you will return to this album quite often and too many times. Because it's done with passion, enthusiasm, compiled smartly, full of melody and drive turning into swoon. Maybe these guys are not full of charisma on the stage but they know what they are playing and they surely like it!
